What is a PDF file format?

PDF stands for “Portable Document Format“, it was designed by Adobe. Its purpose was to present text and images in same visual irrespective of any software, hardware or operating system. For example, if you see a PDF file format on internet browsers like Internet Explorer, chrome etc. Its visual format will remain same. However, its close rival MS Word requires dedicated software Microsoft Word. And if you use same software on different devices the virtual display of file content such as text and images will change.
